Several bottles. (Expensive, but cheaper than therapy.)
Have a bottle everywhere. In the bathroom, kitchen, living room, bedroom, your purse, on your desk at work.
When you stick your finger in your mouth, STOP IMMEDIATELY and go wash your hands. Slather lotion on immediately after drying your hands.
Soon there will be no rough edges to notice.
Your hands will be smooth and normal!
I also wear gloves while watching TV.
If I don't keep a pair by the couch to put on before watching a movie, I'll find myself chewing my fingers when it gets about an hour into the movie.
I'm not totally over it yet, but almost!
I feel confident and proud now that my hands look good again.
You can do it. Although I always disliked the look of my nails/hands and would hide my fingers when my hands were on show it was never enough to make me try and stop. And now that I am middle-aged (I hate that term) I guess I am more at ease with who I am and don't really care as much about what others think, cos I am who I am and being a nail/skin biter doesn't make me a bad person or unlikeable!

One thing that always irked me was "normal" people who would smack my hands if they saw them in my mouth. How rude! An adult should not be treated like a dog who has chewed a pair of shoes! And no amount of hitting, poking or criticism will make a person stop anyway.

I am sure there is a cure - it is a habit and habits can be broken. I managed to give up smoking after 15 years by sheer mind-power. The mind is extremely powerful and what we tell ourselves we believe. I just told myself I was a non-smoker repeatedly and envisioned myself without a cigarette in my hand. IT WORKED!

I know I could probably give up the skin biting too if I really put my mind to it. The question is: do I want to give it up enough? Hmmm - that's a tough one!

It's nearly 3 years since this post was started but it is great that people have "come out" so to speak and shared their own private stories.

Vanessa, I salute you for starting this - I know you have helped many people by bringing it out in the open.

NZgalAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5074000254394034861.post-25199088426531687062012-01-11T16:40:34.802-05:002012-01-11T16:40:34.802-05:00Hey everyone. I also have the "if I think about it it will come true" thoughts that you have. I will be interested to see if therapy works for you. This is an extrememly embarassing problem, and I've never been able to stop. I actually started by looking up nail problems because I have malformed nails that started when I was in my 20's. I'm not sure if I've damage my nail bed from all of the chewing I've done, and was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Anyway, thanks again for being brave enough to tell your story. Now I don't feel so alone.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5074000254394034861.post-69257326774955902812011-03-04T17:08:14.092-05:002011-03-04T17:08:14.092-05:00I have just read all three posts. This scared me and excited me at the same time, to know there is a name, and other people with this problem. Thank you for sharing!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5074000254394034861.post-45956875275186814292010-06-15T02:05:28.311-04:002010-06-15T02:05:28.311-04:00I am actually in school getting my doctorate in ps...I am actually in school getting my doctorate in psychology and have never heard of Dermatophagia. But I know ALLLLLLL about it. For one of my classes, we were told to pick a behavior of ours that interested/bothered us and journal on it. We are supposed to use Cognitive theory to alter said behavior. I picked my skin chewing. And started researching. And realized how not normal it is. And then I found your blog and nearly started to cry, especially the part when you mentioned how badly you wanted to chew when you were told "no." Thank God there's someone out there who gets it! And maybe now that I'm training to be a psychologist, I can shed some more light on the treatment and education, since both seem to be SORELY lacking.
Thanks for putting yourself out there.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5074000254394034861.post-31747334347941376082010-04-22T17:10:30.346-04:002010-04-22T17:10:30.346-04:00I just stumbled across your blog & read all 3 ...I just stumbled across your blog & read all 3 parts of your story - thank you so much for sharing!!

I, too, pick my fingers like crazy. And I've often wondered what kind of help is out there but refrained out of fear of the unknown. You sharing your visits with the therapist and his suggestions have been a true blessing to me.

I hate this "habit" & I have tried to stop on my own but never made any progress. I even asked my husband to stop me and, like you, freak out when he grabs my hands and won't let me. But my 6 year-old daughter is doing the exact same thing to her fingers now - and all I can think is this is a behavior she has learned from me - that I'm responsible every time she asks for a bandaid for her bleeding thumb. So I've got to stop - so I can help her to stop. So I'm going to try every single step you mentioned.Sparks of Emberhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12971371995599010711noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5074000254394034861.post-41935653997088256262009-10-25T10:13:53.723-04:002009-10-25T10:13:53.723-04:00I've read all three parts of your personal sto...I've read all three parts of your personal story, & I have the same condition! I didn't know it was actually called something, but maybe I'll try some of the therapy tecniques you listed on my own.
